The Colombian national oil company Ecopetrol SA (NYSE:EC) was founded in 1948, formerly known as Empresa Colombiana de Petróleos, and changed to its current name in June 2003. It is headquartered in Bogotá, Colombia, and has 8,731 full-time employees. The country’s second largest oil company has a daily production capacity of approximately 75,000 barrels of crude oil.

The National Petroleum Corporation of Colombia is an integrated oil company that is mainly engaged in the exploration, development and production of crude oil and natural gas in Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Angola and the Gulf Coast of the United States. Ecopetrol SA is divided into three departments to operate: Exploration and Production (Exploration and Production), Transportation and Logistics (Transportation and Logistics), Refining, Petrochemicals, and Biofuels (Refining, Petrochemicals, and Biofuels).
In addition, the National Petroleum Corporation of Colombia also owns and operates various:
- Refined products, including: unleaded gasoline, diesel, kerosene, jet fuel, aviation fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, sulfur, heavy fuel oil, etc. production plants;
- Petrochemical industry products, including: paraffin wax, lubricating base oil, low-density polyethylene, aromatics, asphalt, alkylate, cyclohexane and aliphatic solvents, and refining grade propylene;
- Ecopetrol also sells a variety of refined oil and raw material inventory products, including: regular and high-octane gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, natural gas, petrochemical products and other products;
- The National Petroleum Corporation of Colombia is also involved in the transportation of crude oil, motor fuel, fuel oil, and refined oil products such as diesel and biomass fuels.
As of December 31, 2015, Ecopetrol owns and operates approximately 8,986 kilometers of crude oil and multifunctional pipelines, which transport refined oil to wholesale distribution points.
