2. Comau History:

  • The name COMAU is derived from the abbreviation of COnsorzio MAcchine Utensili (Machine Tool Alliance). It was founded in 1973 to integrate all operations in Turin and surrounding areas to provide equipment for the Togliattigrad VAZ plant in Russia to manufacture Russian fighters.
  • In 1977, MST SpA, Morando SpA, IMPSPA and Colubra Lamsat SpA merged into a single company named Comau Industriale SpA.
  • In 1978, Comau SpA was formally established, bringing all the factories and industrial activities of Comau Industriale SpA together. But later it was renamed Comau Finanziaria SpA.
  • In 1984, Coau Productivity Systems Inc., a company branched out from Europe, was established and began to develop commercial and industrial activities in North America.
  • In 1988, Comau Finanziaria SpA acquired a majority stake in Italtech SpA, a company specializing in plastic injection molding machines. In the following year, it merged Berto Lamet, a sheet metal mold manufacturer, and UTS, which specializes in product and process engineering design. Berto Lamet subsequently acquired TEA, a company that makes injection molds; in 1990, Berto Lamet acquired the Spanish company Mecaner SA, a company specializing in the production of sheet metal molds.
  • In 1995, the company’s development spread throughout South America, Europe, North America and Asia. Comau do Brasil Ind e Com. Ltda and Comau Argentina SA are established to bring all Comau business units into the Mercosur. Comau Deutschland GmbH is established in Germany. Comau Productivity Systems expanded its structure and changed its name to Comau North America Inc. In addition, a representative office in Beijing, China was established.
  • In 1996, Comau France SA was established. In the same year, the company officially changed its name to Comau SpA.
  • In 1997, the company acquired a majority stake in Geico SpA, a manufacturer of spray systems for the automotive industry. Comau India Pvt. Ltd. was established in Pune as the company’s headquarters in Southeast Asia. Comau Poland Sp.zoo, a sheet metal mold production plant, began operations in Tychy, and it also began to provide maintenance services at the end of the year.   • In 1999, Comau acquired the French company Sciaky SA, a manufacturer of body systems and welding guns, and then the company was renamed Comau Sciaky SA. Also in that year, Comau SpA acquired the majority of shares in Renault Automation SA, a company specializing in engineering design, metal cutting, mechanical assembly and body assembly. In the same year, Fiat SpA merged with Progressive Tool and Industries Co. (PICO), an American company with experience in body system manufacturing, and subsequently changed its name to Comau Pico. In the United Kingdom, Pico Estil in Luton became Comau Estil; in South Africa, Aims in Uitenhage was renamed Comau South Africa Pty. Ltd.
  • In 2000, Comau Automotive Equipment Co., Ltd. was established in Shanghai; Comau Belgium NV was established to carry out maintenance services in Northern Europe. Comau Systems Services SL begins operations in Madrid. In the second year, Comau SpA merged two companies operating in the fields of automotive products, process engineering and industrialization, German-Intec GmbH and Team Resources Romania, to form Comau România SA
  • In 2001, Comau Australia was established in Adelaide.
  • In 2002, Comau Ingest Sverige AB was established in Sweden.
  • In 2003, Comau Russia Srl and Comau (Shanghai) International Trading Co., Ltd. started operations, mainly engaged in import and export business.
  • In 2004, Comau Sciaky SA became the wholly-owned owner of Gerbi & Sciaky, a French company that produces welding tongs, and changed its name to Sciaky SAS.
  • In 2005, Comau Service France, Comau Sciaky and Sciaky SAS were merged into Comau France SA.
  • In 2005, Comau Germann-Intec GmbH merged with Comau Deutschland GmbH.
  • In 2007, Comau-Germann Intec GmbH began to specialize in engineering design in Germany.
  • In 2009, Comau Aviation was formally established. Comau returned to the aviation manufacturing field and began to provide aircraft automated assembly systems, assembly processes and layouts, drilling and riveting systems, etc. Subsequently, between 2010 and 2011, Comau expanded its product range through the Comau Green Project, manufacturing products and providing services for the energy industry.   • In 2010, Comau China established branches in Chongqing and Shenzhen.

  • In 2012, Comau China’s Shanghai Phase II plant was completed and put into production.

3. Comau China’s development history

  • Comau entered the Chinese market in 1997 and established a wholly-owned enterprise-Comau (Shanghai) Automotive Equipment Co., Ltd. in 2000. At the beginning of its establishment, its main business was to provide automobile body welding production lines, powertrain systems and other automated production equipment related to automobile manufacturing for major automobile manufacturers in China. In July 2010, “Comau (Shanghai) Automotive Equipment Co., Ltd.” was officially renamed “Comau (Shanghai) Engineering Co., Ltd.”.

  • In 2010, Comau Chongqing branch and Shenzhen branch were established one after another. In June 2011, Comau China’s manufacturing base in Kunshan, Ke Kun (Kunshan) Automation Co., Ltd. was formally established and started operations.
  • In 2013, Comau (Shanghai) Engineering Co., Ltd. established a Dalian branch.
